I know this has nothing to do with jazz although I know many jazz fans and musicians who are into cycling and, of course, vice versa.
The late drummer Ray Brown and the equally late trumpet player Fred Rowe, both of the Tyne Valley Stompers, took part in local BLRC road races back in the 1950s as well as gigging around the various jazz clubs and festivals. Both activities were not without suffering.
Jazz Journal's Fred Grand who was also involved with JNE at one period was also an active cyclist and, going way back, JJ's first editor Sinclair Traill, was an enthusiast - there are many more. Even Mick Jagger has been known to get some satisfaction from turning the pedals.
So I think I'm justified in saying 'Well done that man!' Simon's now got the Giro (Italy) and the Vuelta (Spain) under his belt which just leaves France - see you on the podium in July...
And, talking about Les Tour de France, on June 22 at Gosforth Civic Theatre, Carlton Kirby will be live talking about his experiences travelling with the race as a commentator for Eurosport and other channels it looks to ba a compelling and entertaining evening. Lance
