News of a new monthly Sunday afternoon residency in Middlesbrough tempted BSH to check it out. Formerly a Primitive Methodist chapel on Whitehouse Street, Chapel is a thriving, CAMRA award-winning, micro pub. Numerous events, including live music, have attracted folk from all points. This afternoon an encouraging number of jazz fans took their seats - some sitting in the pews! - to enjoy two sets by the Ian Bosworth Quintet.
This inaugural session opened with Comin' Home Baby. A good choice! The quintet featured two or three faces familiar to BSH - guitarist and bandleader Bosworth, tenor saxophonist Richie Emmerson (Darlington Big Band) and pianist Garry Hadfield. Bassist Ron Smith and drummer Mark Hawkins were 'names' on the Teesside scene, it was good to put a face to a name. Guest trumpeter Neil Brodie was the unknown quantity. Bosworth's set list mixed it up, from Out of Nowhere to Blue Bossa as a samba, to the first set closing number All the Things You Are.
Your correspondent was obliged to depart at the interval as a ticketed event elsewhere in town was due to begin at three o'clock. On the evidence of forty five minutes' worth of jazz here at Chapel, Ian Bosworth and co could be onto a winner. Russell
