Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Greg Abate @ the Lescar, Sheffield - July 17

Greg Abate (alto sax); Nick Mantz (keys); James Owston (bass); Euan Palmer (drums)

I have visited the Lescar on at least one other occasion which was to see US guitar legend Mundell Lowe who appeared alongside my friend Trefor Owen. However, this was a long time ago and I have a feeling the Lescar may have been situated at a different location to its present one.

When I had a car, my last day driving was returning from a Clark Tracey gig at the Meadows in Sheffield. I well remember it was a hairy drive home along the unlit Snake Pass. Sheffield, like its close neighbour Leeds, has long been a great jazz town but, on this occasion, getting there proved to be extremely diificult due to many factors but it involved  things like non-existent hotel bookings, getting in and out of taxis, having to change coaches at Leeds, the list goes on but I won’t bore you with further details.

Fortunately, the actual gig ran smoothly and, like all Greg’s gigs, it was a high-energy masterclass in creative modern jazz and even I who have seen Greg live many many times was surprised how good it turned out to be.

A dozen tunes were played including one request. Killer Joe, the Benny Golson number which was played in honour of a Stockport Abate super-fan and his friend who, like us, had decided that this gig was unmissable. They had driven there.

Regarding the rhythm section, they were first rate. The bass player I have heard before on a couple of occasions at the Railway but the other two are new names to me and I must admit they  amazed me with their expertise.and I am sure Greg was well satisfied with the backing he received. Mike Farmer

Yardbird Suite; There Will Never be Another You; Crazeology; JAG (When Lights Are Low); Stella By Starlight; Positive Energy; Killer Joe; Confirmation; 'Round Midnight; On The Road; Triste; Bebop
