EP review: MGB - Me, Him, You

Debra Milne (voice); Steve Glendinning (guitar); Michael Clark (bass)

All three musicians are long established names on the north east jazz scene and all are heard to advantage on this, their latest download.

Milne has a distinctive, easily recognisable voice. Caressing her songs like a mother pampering a child, the emotional content that emerges reveals a singer who isn't just singing the words but living them. Not surprising as they were her words to begin with.

Glendinning, provides the perfect accompaniment; backing and soloing with the chordal aplomb of George Barnes or Bucky Pizzarelli. Fellow fretman Bradley Johnston composed Too Busy For Thinkin' and local piano legend Alan Glen penned Dawn at Sunset, the title possibly inspired by Mingus' Tonight at Noon.

The boppy take on Bradley's rhythm changes based number provided a pleasant change and I'd like to hear more up tempo numbers from the band.

Mike Clark was Gibraltar steady on bass holding it all together with that unobtrusive swing which is the hallmark of a good bass player.

The melodies & lyrics for the three songs co-written with Glendinning were by Debra with Steve adding the chords. All three musicians contributed to the arrangements.

The album is to be launched at Durham Fringe Festival with five daily performances at Cafédral in Durham City. Details HERE. Lance
