This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Preview: The Pasadena Roof Orchestra @ The Fire Station, Sunderland (April 14)

At the heart of Sunderland's 'Cultural Quarter', the Fire Station is hosting its fair share of the region's high profile jazz concerts. In the coming weeks and months you'll be able to hear the Ronnie Scott's All Stars, the Strictly Smokin' Big Band and the James Taylor Quartet. More immediately, this Friday (April 14) the hugely popular Pasadena Roof Orchestra will be in concert on High Street West. Formed in 1969 by John Arthy, the PRO has enjoyed critical and popular acclaim the length and breadth of the the country and on its many European tours. 

The PRO took its name from Harry Warren's Home in Pasadena, a first LP was recorded in 1974, a tour of Germany followed and some years later the band undertook a first tour of America. On the road ever since, many famous names have passed through the ranks including Alan Barnes and Enrico Tomasso, and the young guns haven't been overlooked, trombonist Rory Ingham having recently worked with the band. At the Fire Station it's likely that Tom 'Spats' Langham will be onboard alongside a host of familiar faces. Tickets are available from: www.sunderlandculture.org.uk. Russell
