I'd have warmed up if there had been bass and drums in the mix but that wasn't what it was all about.
It would also have helped if Speake had used a mic for his introduction to the pieces, which were mainly originals but, I guess the on stage mic was purely for recording purposes.
His words, even in the relatively small space of Sage Two didn't reach the 'bleacher seats'. I did recognise Stella by Starlight and one of the tunes did bear a passing resemblance to St. Thomas but it would have been helpful to have had, or rather to have heard, the inspiration behind the various compositions.
Still, it was a privilege to be there and if, over in Stage One, Mike and the Mechanics claimed the bragging rights audience-wise our duo certainly clinched it jazz-wise.
