This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Martin Speake and Alcyona Mick @ Sage Gateshead - April 20

A difficult one to comment on. Two virtuoso instrumentalists - Speake has a tone and a technique to die for and Mick certainly knows her way around the 88s but, somehow, whilst admiring their artistry, it left me just a little bit cold.

I'd have warmed up if there had been bass and drums in the mix but that wasn't what it was all about.

It would also have helped if Speake had used a mic for his introduction to the pieces, which were mainly originals but, I guess the on stage mic was purely for recording purposes.

His words, even in the relatively small space of Sage Two didn't reach the 'bleacher seats'. I did recognise Stella by Starlight and one of the tunes did bear a passing resemblance to St. Thomas but it would have been helpful to have had, or rather to have heard, the inspiration behind the various compositions.

Still, it was a privilege to be there and if, over in Stage One, Mike and the Mechanics claimed the bragging rights audience-wise our duo certainly clinched it jazz-wise.
