This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Mamas Gun - At Pizzza Express Live in London

After Pizza Express' initial Scott Hamilton release on their new PX label this comes as a great big letdown. In truth it doesn't belong on a jazz blog in fact I'm not quite sure where it belongs (don't tempt me!) The sleeve writer compares it to albums by Donny Hathaway and maybe she's right.
There's a lot of soul in there but, hand on heart, it's not for me. I suppose, given that Hathaway never did do nothing nor something for me (sort that one out!) I'm the wrong person to be passing comment on this album. Judging by the applause, the audience were loving it and maybe I would too if I was juiced up and enjoying the house pizza, or perhaps acting the hip cool dude at Hoochie Coochie, but in the cold light of morning it just doesn't hit the spot with me. If any of our more soulful readers/reviewers want a crack at it, and me, they are welcome.

Let's hope PX have some jazzier releases in the pipeline - after Scott Hamilton it's going to be a tough call although the Pizza archives must be bursting at the seams with material screaming to be heard.

How I'd love to hear again those sessions with Barry Harris, Leo Richardson/Eric Alexander, Lee Konitz, Sarah Moule, Ann Hampton Callaway to mention but a few. The solution is for everyone reading this to buy the Scott Hamilton album - you won't regret it - and prove that this is where their market is, or am I just imaging life in a perfect, imperfect world?
