This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Hartley Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Nov. 22

Rod Mason was listed as being Paul’s guest but, due to unforeseen circumstances, he had to cancel. His replacement was local reeds man Jim Collins who, for this gig, played tenor sax exclusively. The first set consisted of six tunes, the first five being standards the last one was an uptempo Four - a tune long associated with Miles Davis but composed by Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson.

The second set started with that well known Hank Mobley tune This I Dig Of You which Hank recorded on his brilliant Blue Note album Soul Station and if you like melodic tenor playing you will find that that record is an essential buy. 


Stardust is a number that had Paul Hartley playing some chords that made me think of Bill Frisell but for me this tune reminds me of the great version Clark Terry did during a Jazz at the Phil tour in the UK.


The audience turnout was higher than normal for a Tuesday night and the last two numbers were very well received. These tunes Recorda Me and Voyage were featured during Greg Abate’s recent Wakefield gig  but it was good to hear them again with Jim and Paul being given excellent backing from Ken and Eryl. 


A very satisfying evening and the next jazz at the Railway will be Sunday Nov 27 and a 9:00pm start with reeds maestro Munch Manship. Mike Farmer
