Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Merlin Roxby @ Prohibition Bar - Nov. 19

Merlin Roxby (piano)

Merlin who? you say. No, me neither. Listed on Prohibition Bar's website as playing ragtime and stride piano and making his debutcuriosity won out. One or two familiar faces were in the house having a night out - Hi Ray, Patrick...The establishment's upright is, shall we say, in need of some TLC. Hey! If a dud piano was good enough for Fats Waller (he must have played any number of them), the piano on Pink Lane would be good enough for the unknown, mysterious, Mr Merlin Roxby.

Starting promptly at eight o'clock, Merlin sat down and began to play. For the next sixty minutes he didn't say Boo! to a goose. Reams of sheet music, no announcements, nothing, simply ragtime and stride piano. How come a twenty-something was into this stuff? This debut performance wasn't simply a Prohibition Bar debut, this was Merlin's debut public appearance, period. Perhaps that explains his non-existent announcements. We can forgive him that. Joplin rags, the Top Cat theme (Officer Dibble & co.), Wayne Hill's Left Bank Two (the Vision On tv theme tune), James P Johnson and Fats Waller in his sights, we're going to be hearing a lot more from Merlin Roxby.
