Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Peter Morgan Trio @ Dorman's Jazz Club Middlesbrough-Sept. 29

Peter Morgan (piano); Vilda Kuby (double bass); Paul Campbell (drums).

It was a pleasure to have the Peter Morgan Trio making their debut as the guest band this month at Dorman's.

Three top class musicians giving us their own interpretations of mainly jazz standards starting with a fine swinging version of There Will Never Be Another You.

The lovely ballad by Guy Wood, My One And Only Love, featured Vilda's exceptional and moving bass solo.

After Black Orpheus, an original composition by Peter - Jo Jo - a lively swinging number driven along by Paul's  fine drumming. A nice blues, the Eagles' Desperado was followed by Quincy Jones' Silhouette and Woody Shaw's jazz waltz In A Capricornian Way.

The first set was brought to a close in style with Charlie Parker's Ornithology - piano and bass playing the melody in unison.

The second set began with an up tempo version of Parker's Yardbird Suite showing just how tight a trio this was.

A beautiful rendition of Benny Golson's I Remember Clifford was followed by Up Jumped Spring both with excellent piano work.

A nice composition by Peter - a ballad with a Parisien  feel - A Dam Sa Moi.
Autumn Leaves featured Vilda and was played with great dynamics and feeling. Willow Weep For Me was followed by Cute giving Paul the opportunity to show his great drumming skills.

The night was then brought to a close with a powerful version the classic Miles Davis All Blues  - VIDEO LINK.

Many thanks go to The Peter  Morgan Trio for travelling to Teesside and supporting our jazz night with such an impressive group.

Thanks also as usual go to Dorman's for their help and support enabling us to keep the jazz night going. Ron Hampton
