Bebop Spoken There

Dominick "Domo" Branch: ''Most people say drummers can't write, they're just time-keepers only beating on things. But I have a very musical brain.'' (DownBeat February, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

JPN Conference Announcement Where Pathways Meet: Jazz Promotion Network

(Press release)

Programmed in partnership with Moving On Music in Belfast and the Improvised Music Company in Dublin, ‘Where Pathways Meet’ will have a firm focus on the future of jazz in these islands and beyond. Topics for discussion include supporting young musicians, inclusion, green touring, future governance, and a 360 degree look at a 21st century career in music.

The panels will feature a wide range of speakers, including musicians Orphy Robinson, Georgia Mancio, Claude Deppa, Tomos Williams, Scott Flanigan and David Lyttle, educators Pauline Black, Paula Gardiner and Helena Summerfield (Jazz Camp for Girls), academics Sarah Raine and Nick Gebhardt, plus representatives of key organisations including Black Lives In Music , Attitude is Everything and Jazz Newblood.

We’re thrilled that Belfast-born composer Brian Irvine MBE will join us on Thursday for a keynote speech on the theme of ‘Jazz as a Beacon of Hope’.

Delegates will have a chance to hear some of the most exciting jazz artists from across the island of Ireland in the relaxed surroundings of The Black Box (a few minutes from the MAC) in an unmissable programme curated by our conference partners Moving On Music and Improvised Music Company. Thrill to the sounds of Scott Flanigan QuartetRBG Trio, Izumi Kimura and Lina AndonovskaRobocobra Quartet. There will be further live music slots throughout the daytime, including sets from MOBO award winning percussionist David Lyttle and composer and drummer Stephen Davis.
