Dean Masser Quartet @ the Railway, Stockdale - Oct. 9

In his opening announcement Dean mentioned that all the tunes would be his own originals but as it turned out two of the tunes were composed by other people and  both were ballads. The first one was that wonderful song made popular by Billie Holiday Easy Living composed by Ralph Rainger who was also responsible for If I Should Lose You and Thanks For The Memory the latter being used by comedian Bob Hope as his theme song. Rainger died in 1942 when the DC3 plane he was a passenger in was involved in a mid-air collision with a bomber just outside of Palm Springs. The second ballad was Ellington’s In A Sentimental Mood and this was given a fine reading by Dean who really got into the essence of this number ably assisted by Andzrej and Ed who never fail to impress.

Dean’s originals were all well received and the energy level of the quartet was enhanced by the explosive drumming of Gaz Hughes. Ed Harrison got to play an extended bass solo on the closing number  which was an uptempo blues by Dean called F B Blues. A fitting conclusion to a great night of hard driving be-bop. The next jazz night at the Railway will be Tuesday Oct 11 with the Paul Hartley Quartet featuring Mike Hope. Mike Farmer
