Bebop Spoken There

Warne Marsh: "At some point, you have to be prepared to create—to perform. It's vital, man, if we're talking about jazz, the original jazz, the performing art. It fulfils its meaning only when you play it live in front of an audience." DownBeat January 1983.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Paul Hartley Quartet featuring Alex Clarke @ the Railway, Stockport - April 12

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Paul Hartley (guitar); Alex Clarke (alto/tenor sax); Ken Marley (bass); Eryl Roberts (drums).

On her last visit, Alex Clarke brought along her alto sax. This time she elected to play tenor sax on certain tunes. Her sound on both horns made me think of another saxophonist - the late James Moody who also liked to feature both alto and tenor saxes as well as flute. Sonny Stitt was another musician who was a major influence on sax players. Stitt, like Moody, made many trips to the UK

The selection of tunes tonight - a dozen in total - were mainly standards plus a Jobim bossa and Parker’s Au Privave

I wonder why this year there seems to be an increase in the number of musicians featuring Darn That Dream when choosing a ballad to play? As it is April, I'll  Remember April  got an airing and if I were to pick out the tunes that were highspots I would say the opener How Deep Is The Ocean? and the second number which was In Your Own Sweet Way a Dave Brubeck tune.

It must be difficult in present times being a touring jazz musician working with strange rhythm sections but if you want one that is capable of handling any type of situation it is the Paul Hartley trio and tonight they did a first class job.

The next jazz night at the Railway is Sunday April 17 with the Gaz Hughes Trio. Mike Farmer

How Deep Is The Ocean?; In Your Own Sweet Way; I‘ll Remember April; Darn That Dream; It’s You Or No One;  Alice in Wonderland;Au Privave; You Stepped Out of a Dream; Lullaby of the Leaves; Desafinado; In A Sentimental Mood;
It’s All Right With Me.
