Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Mike Hall Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - April 3

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Mike Hall (tenor sax); Andrzej  Baranek (keys); Ed Harrison (bass); Jack Cotterill (drums).

 Mike started the show with a very fast version of Pennies From Heaven, his sound on tenor being louder than last time I heard him. His playing style is high-energy on the up-tempo numbers but he calmed things down on the second tune which was that great ballad You’ve Changed composed by Carl Fischer and Bill Carey.

It’s always a pleasure to see and hear Andrzej Baranek on a gig and if you are looking for someone who can handle those tricky be-bop tunes he is the guy to get. He really took off on the Horace Silver original Room 608  and I also liked what he did on another bop classic Dizzy Gillespie’s Groovin’ High.

Ed Harrison on bass and Jack Cotterill on drums did a great job in supporting Mike and also played some creative solos.

The next jazz night at the Railway is April 5 with the Steve Oakes Band featuring Freddie Garner. Mike Farmer

Pennies From Heaven; You’ve Changed; Room 608; Con Alma; Stardust; Speak Low; Sugar; Groove Merchant; Untitled Blues; Groovin’ High;
If You Could See Me Now; Shiny Stockings;  Secret Love.
