Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''We knew back in the day that Emmet [Cohen] had it.'' (DownBeat July, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adrian Cox & Sky Murphy streaming from sunny Portugal - April 3

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Sky Murphy (guitar, vocals)

Adrian Cox and Sky Murphy go way back. TJ Johnson employed the pair of them before going their separate musical ways, Adrian the globetrotting troubadour, Sky slumming it in Portugal. Clarinet maestro Cox was visiting his old mate to celebrate Murphy's birthday (tomorrow, Monday). An early celebration on Saturday evening rendered birthday boy Murphy hoarse, tee-total Cox thankful he wasn't suffering the morning-after-the-night-before blues!

I've lost the set list said Cox. There it is! said Murphy. The 'set list' resembled a supermarket till receipt, the pair's planning clearly something of an afterthought. A surfboard in the background, our duo opened with Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams. Troubles? Sun, sea, surf, it's a hard life! A gravel-voiced Murphy sang Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor, no doubt one of many tunes he played back in the day.

Jim Reeves' hit He'll Have to Go worked well, similarly a choro number, the title of which escaped your correspondent. A desperately hoarse Murphy sang La Vie en Rose with a little help from Cox. As the hour was just about up, online supremo Cox thanked his audience, telling one and all to log on next week (Sunday 10 April, one o'clock) as he clocks up two years as a live-streamer. Our man hopes to be joined by Will Sach and possibly Dave Archer and/or Simon Picton and whoever else is up for it. Russell
