Bebop Spoken There

Warne Marsh: "At some point, you have to be prepared to create—to perform. It's vital, man, if we're talking about jazz, the original jazz, the performing art. It fulfils its meaning only when you play it live in front of an audience." DownBeat January 1983.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Album review: Catherine Russell - Send For Me

When your daddy is the legendary bandleader Luis Russell (1902-1963) you have a whole lot to prove and Catherine hasn't besmirched the family name. Luis Russell led one of the greatest of the early big bands during the 1920s and 1930s, providing the backdrop for Satchmo's pre-war big band recordings and he would surely have been beaming with pride hearing his daughter's blues-drenched voice laying waste to most of the younger contenders.

Imagine a mix of Bessie and Dinah W with a touch of, but not too much, sophistication and you have a voice for all seasons.

All the tracks are peppered with solos as hot as hot can be - Kellso and Allred in particular sizzle although no one falls short.

Favourite track? Tough call but Blue and Sentimental really nails it. Russell manages to merge the feeling of Herschel Evans' tenor and Lester's clarinet on the old Basie recording into her vocal. When the roll is called up yonder she'll be there, alongside Bessie, Billie, Ella and Sarah but, hopefully, not for a long long time. Simply wonderful - Lance

Available on Dot Time Records- CD/Digi - Bandcamp.

Catherine Russell (vocals); Matt Munisteri (MD, guitar, banjo) + (collectively): Tal Ronen (bass); Mark McLean (drums); Mark Shane or Sean Mason (piano); Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet); John Allred (trombone); Evan Arntzen (reeds); Paul Nedzela (bari sax); Mark Loperman or Aaron Heick (tenor sax); Philip Norris (tuba).
