The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: The Velvet Fog meets Shirley Bassey (tonight, Friday)

The Shirley Bassey Show on BBC 4 this evening (7:10pm) should be worth watching. Mel Tormé appears, as does Clive Westlake, songwriter for many famous names, including Elvis, Cilla Black, Vera Lynn, Tom Jones and Ms Bassey. For a while in the fifties, Westlake worked as a music teacher at a school in Ryhope, near Sunderland. Russell

There's also a programme at 6:00pm on Talking Pictures about Matt Monro which may appeal to the more conservative viewers. That guy could sing!

This was a bit of an anti climax! The Velvet Fog only got one number - a completely forgettable Paul Williams song. The show was all about Shirley really, allowing her time for several dress changes - oh, those 1970's fashions. Anyway, the previous week's show apparently featured the Stan Getz Quartet - wonder how much time they were allocated?
