This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Michael Connelly: A Darkness More than Night and Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section

Another great crime novel by Connelly (pub. 2000 - Orion Books) and, as always,  LA cop Harry Bosch, listens to some jazz in between seeking justice and in the process - on this occasion - finding himself in the hot seat. 

This time he's listening to Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section which also just happens to be one of my favourite albums too. Bosch digresses over a couple of pages on the legendary album Pepper made for Contemporary with Miles' sidemen.


As always, the music is just for moments of relaxation in between bringing down the bad guys but, I remember lying in bed way back when - it was late and I was listening to Willis Conover's jazz programme (in special English!) on the Voice of America. VOA was a radio station aimed at the Iron Curtain parts of the world which could, nevertheless, be picked up in the UK. The track was Jazz Me Blues! Here was Pepper blowing a tune associated with Bix! That may have been the moment when I concluded that jazz was jazz - not trad or modern, but jazz!
