Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Live at Jack's Place #40 - Jan 19

Jamie Brownfield (trumpet); Mike Smith (tenor sax); Dean Stockdale (piano); Ed Harrison (double bass); Jack Cotterill (drums)

Covid strikes again! As regular pianist Andrzej Baranek is currently in isolation host Jack Cotterill invited Dean Stockdale to head down to the Potteries from his County Durham home*. BSH readers will be more than familiar with Stockdale who maintains a busy schedule across the north east of England and, indeed, further afield. This evening's quintet opened with How High the Moon.

Drummer Cotterill and bassist Ed Harrison laid the foundations, the horns - Jamie Brownfield and Mike Smith - and Stockdale rotated the solos. Trumpeter Brownfield played some killer stuff throughout, Smith impressed on Freddie Freeloader and again on In a Mellow Tone, Stockdale on several numbers (StardustCape Verdean BluesFreddie Freeloader), all in all a good online session.

Dean Stockdale will be at Opus 4 Jazz Club (Traveller's Rest), Darlington on Friday (Jan 21). Leading an ace quartet, Stockdale plans to play some numbers written by or associated with Oscar Peterson. Eight quid at the door, eight o'clock start. Russell
