Jazz in the Afternoon @ Cullercoats Crescent Club - Jan 3

Herbie Hudson (trombone, harmonica, vocals); Brian Chester (piano); John Robinson (double bass); Ian Hetherington (drums) + Brian Lynam (harmonica, vocals); John Broddle (vocals); Harry Stephenson (clarinet)

The unseasonably mild weather no doubt encouraged a good turn out for the first Jazz in the Afternoon session of the year. The house band enjoyed the company of bassist John Robinson, otherwise it was the usual faces on parade - Messrs Hudson, Chester and Hetherington. Mr Hudson ushered in the new year with a chorus of Auld Lang Syne segueing into My Gal Sal. It wasn't long before the first of the afternoon's sitters-in joined the party.

Brian Lynam, of No Time for Jive fame, suggested Don't Get Around Much Anymore. John Broddle suggested I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me and stayed on to sing September in the Rain. As the interval approached, so did the rain, for real. The raffle prizes went elsewhere...

Second set, Herbie Hudson wasted little time in getting the guests back on to the stand. If I Had You sang Mr B, clearly a Sinatra fan. 'Deed I Do workedMr B knows his stuffThe harmonica boys - Hudson and Lynam - momentarily ditched the jazz to play a rock 'n' roll-inspired crowd-pleasing duet kicked along by Ian Hetherington. And to close another Monday down at Cullercoats Bay, the JITA boys were joined by veteran clarinetist Harry Stephenson to play The Sheik of Araby. More next week, one o'clock. Russell
