Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Mike Hall Quartet Live @ the Railway, Stockport - July 11

(Mike Hall (tenor) 2016)

I hadn’t intended to go to the Railway last night as I assumed Mike would cancel due to the England-Italy game but I was wrong.  I got a phone call from my friend Jeff asking me where I was as Mike Hall was about to start his first set.

I jumped into my car and got there in record time due to hardly any traffic and only missed the first tune. The line-up was Mike Hall tenor sax and soprano sax; Ed Harrison double bass, Eryl Roberts drums and instead of the expected Richard Weatherall on piano, his replacement was the excellent Steve Buckley on guitar.

The tunes they played were:  Days of Wine and Roses; Estate; The Song Is You; Superwoman; How Deep is the Ocean?; Groove Merchant; Donna Lee; Embraceable You; Willow Weep for Me;  Secret Love.

Mike always plays at the top of his game and the backing trio were well up to the task. I had not heard the tune Superwoman before. Mike told me he got it from a Phil Woods album.

There was only a handful of listeners in the small jazz room but it was a great night and two old friends turned up, both jazz guitarists so they were highly impressed by Steve Buckley’s playing.

There’s more Jazz at the Railway (JATR) tomorrow night (Tuesday) - Julian Gregory with the Paul Hartley Trio. I will attend.  Mike Farmer
