Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Live from the Flat with Rossano Sportiello #39 - June 29

(Screenshot by Russell)
Rossano Sportiello (piano); Scott Robinson (tenor sax, trumpet)

Another Live from the Flat session. From his Greenwich Village home, Rossano Sportiello chalked up number 39, make that # 39, in his weekly streamed gigs. This evening our Italian born, NYC resident played a duo set with Scott Robinson. A most compatible pairing, they've worked together many times in New York and elsewhere. Everything I Love for starters, followed by Step into My Dreams, throughout the set Robinson would feature on tenor sax with a couple of numbers on trumpet.

Our duo agreed that The Shadow of Your Smile is one of the great tunes, they played Johnny Mandel's composition with the utmost sensitivity. Sportiello warned his decidedly mainstream patrons not to be alarmed by a 'free jazz' intro to Muskrat Ramble. What they made of it is anyone's guess, not least as the YouTube stream promptly crashed! Our host apologised, not for daring to introduce something anathema to his supporters, rather for the break in transmission. It was, apparently, one of the very few occasions when things hadn't run smoothly. Connection restored, it was back to some 'proper' jazz, the set closing with Nobody Else But Me. Russell
