Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Creative Space in Manchester

Another important Manchester jazz venue is re-opening after being inactive for 16 months.

Operating under the name Creative Space the music will take place on Tuesday evenings in the upstairs room of the Slug and Lettice, 651 Wilmslow Road, Didsbury, Manchester M20 60 OZ Tel: 0161 434 1011.

Janet Higgins who organises the events tells me she is planning on a five week trial period as follows:

July 20: Johnny Hunter Quartet – Hunter (drums); Adam Fairhall (piano); Joshua Cavanagh-Brierley {bass); Kyran Matthews (tenor sax). This a tribute to the late great piano player Mulgrew Miller.

July 27: Mike Hall (saxes); Andy Hulme (guitar).

Aug. 3: Steve Pimblett  (tenor sax);  Uli Elbrach  (guitar); John Sandham (bass);  Phil Bennett (drums).

Aug. 10: TBA.

Aug. 17: Flat Five - Phil Hayward (saxes); Tom Favell (guitar); Oli Young (bass); Danny Wares  (drums).

All gigs 9:00pm – 11:00pm.

Janet also hopes to re-start the jam sessions if the trial period proves successful. For further info contact Janet Higgins at janethiggins88@gmail.com. Mike Farmer.

Ps: The photo was taken at the venue in 2013. The bass player is Ed Harrison and James Coote is on drums but who is the tenor player?
