Kai's Friday Night Great American Songbook Show - July 3

Kai Hoffman (vocals); Roger Lewyn (piano).

In these world weary days, the good old GASbook never fails to provide a shoulder to weep on. Dennis Potter expressed that theme perfectly in his novel, and later televised masterpiece, Pennies From Heaven.

Potter was writing about America in the days of The Depression - the 1930s. Steinbeck was, perhaps, the finest to use those Dust Bowl days as his inspiration - after all, he was there but, although Potter wasn't he found the inspiration for his story in the songs his hero sold as a sheet music salesman selling to stores who didn't want sheet music.

Fast forward to today and many of those old songs can relate to now and this dreadful situation the world is in. One in particular that seemed to sum it up in Kai's non-stop show was Johnny Mercer's Accentuate the Positive.

I'm not quite sure what the positives are - even an old boozer like me is a little wary of the pubs opening tomorrow - but I will try and eliminate the negatives!

Kai was in good voice, accompanied by the cyber-distanced and equally out of this world pianist Roger Lewyn, the songbook story unfolded.

My Romance; Someone to Watch Over me (that beautiful verse); Summertime (Some Other Time is my name for it!); The  Lady is a Tramp; Prelude to a Kiss; Cheek to CheekAccentuate the Positive; Old Cape Cod. How wonderful to hear that latter tune again after all these years. I remember Patti Page hitting the  charts with it big time.

Old Cape Cod, even the title conveyed that it was something more than Old South Shields ...

Caravan; All the Way; an up tempo People Will Say We're in Love; a medley of They Can't Take That Away From Me, Nice Work if You Can Get it and  'S Wonderful with a shot at We'll Meet Again to finish. There may have been an encore but I figured, quit whilst your winning, Kai's encores sometimes run into next week.

It's a great stream for those of us who like to hear faultless interpretations of the greatest music of the 20th century.
Lance.
PS: Loved seeing Lulu - she's a beaut!
