Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Lunchtime Jazz (18) - Paul Edis Solo

Paul Edis (piano/vocals)

Number 18! No need to go into great detail other than to check out the songs. After 17 previous streams (when does a stream become a river?) we know what to expect. A choice selection of numbers, some originals (none this week!), some standards, all impeccably played with the occasional vocal thrown in - they don't come any better than this!

I Didn't Know What Time it Was.
Let's Get Lost - famously sung by Chet Baker and, more recently, by Claire Martin with the Callum Au Big Band.
Lucky to be Me.
Aqua de Beber.
Early Autumn (some nice Shearing-esque chords).
Feelin' Good.
Too Late Now (one of the all time great ballads).
Let's Fall in Love (complete with verse).
Maybe Next Year (recorded by Art Pepper, composed Duane Tatro).
Moment's Notice.

Apologies for absence: PEAS (Saigon). Watched the show later and loved it all: special mention for - Lucky to Be Me
-Agua de Beber
-Feelin Good
-Let's Fall in Love
-Moment's Notice.
I realise I've just listed most of the show for "special mention" but these shows are like that!
All being well with Emirates Airlines, PEAS (Saigon) will be disbanded before the next show (to re-form as PEAS: Chester-le-Street)!
