Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Coastal Sound: Big Band Bash - July 15

Steve Walker presents a two hour programme every Wednesday on the Skegness based Coastal Sound community radio station. Trumpeter and big band MD Walker knows his large ensemble onions and over the years has established friendships worldwide with many musicians on the big band scene.

This week's edition of Big Band Bash featured any number of musicians giving Steve an audio 'thumbs-up'...Hi, this is Mark Nightingale, you're listening to Big Band Bash or Hi, John Fedcock here from New York City, you're listening to Coastal Sound Radio - paraphrased, of course, but nevertheless giving a flavour of the sense of community among musicians in these lockdown times.

Basie, Texas' One O'clock Lab Band, Germany's WDR Big Band, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Johnny Richards, Don Lusher, Maynard Ferguson, familiar names all, perhaps that's the attraction of this informed, professionally presented programme. In addition to the familiar, Walker regularly plays numbers from lesser known outfits and this week was no exception. The Band of the South Australia Police playing Ya Gatta Try Harder from 2005's Doin' Time album and the RAF Swing Wing Band (based down the road from Skegness in Cranwell) blowing on Nick Lane's Spirit of St Frederick (originally written for Maynard Ferguson) made for an arresting listen!

If classic big bands are your thing then tune-in/logon Wednesdays at eight: www.coastalsound.co.uk.
