Six o'clock, YouTube, Paul Edis. A brief introduction by our host...the audience shouldn't expect a set list of familiar, nor unfamiliar, numbers. Would a pattern emerge or a recurring motif be evident? Did Paul have a basic structure in mind with predetermined sections in place to guide the improvisation? This was to be a continuous half hour or so of streamed stream-of-consciousness creativity.
Two minutes (several bars) in, a discernible gospel vibe gave way to (late nineteenth century?) impressionism. A steep descent found Edis teetering on the brink of a subterranean hellhole only to be rescued, saved, no less, by force of will, and a return to the Promised Land. Oh, yes!
Thirty minutes later Paul stopped playing. He had said enough, his explorations complete, at least for today. Our London based pianist said he would return on Friday at one o'clock 'with, er...some tunes.'

Ann Alex says 'I watched this recording just before bed tonight, great playing with hints of Porgy and Bess meeting a late 19C piano concerto, rounded off by a yet unnamed jazz standard. The perfect nightcap.
