The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. EP Review: Liza Pulman – The Heart Of It


Liza Pulman (voice); Joe Stilgoe (piano); Tony Levin (bass); various others on piano, bass, trumpet, guitar, alto sax, finger clicks.

The most interesting of the 4 EP tracks are I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling and Bye Bye Blackbird. The latter is a very slow version sung to piano and bass, with the actual verse cropping up mid-song, a pleasant change from the usual verse then chorus. The former is the most jazz-like track, a jaunty 1940's style rendition with trumpet and sax solos, great fun.


Unchained Melody and My Favourite Year were beautifully sung but not to my taste at all as the style was musical theatre, which I find rather artificial and over-emotional. Stilgoe and Levin, stars in their own right, add additional class to the recording and, like the singer, have no problem adapting to the varied styles required.

Liza Pulman hails from a theatrical background as her father was a screenwriter and her mother worked as an actress. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and has performed opera at Glyndebourne and also in musical theatre. You may have seen her on television or even live, as she is one third of the singing and comedy group Fascinating Aida.

The EP is available digitally at www.lizapulman.com/music. The full album comes out in Spring 2021 and there will be a performance in London at the Riverside Studios April 19 – 25, 2021
