This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. ET Rides Again: Livestream from Enrico Tomasso & Nick Dawson - May 16

ET to a film buff means an extra-terrestrial being. To a jazzer it means Enrico Tomasso and ne'er the twain shall meet. Well, actually they do, sort of.

The film ET is described as, "A beautiful exploration of a unique friendship", which kind of describes the relationship that our ET has built up with his online audience every weekend since lockdown began.

Being Saturday night, Enrico and Nick were dressed up to the nines - all that was missing were the top hat and tails - and the music befitted the era when that mode of dress was de rigueur on Park Avenue or Park Lane (London not Sunderland).

A slurp of London Pride - our man has good taste in both ale and apparel - then we were off to Swing That Music. He may not have had Louis' big band behind him but, in Nick Dawson he had the next best thing. Nick's a new name to me but, then again, I never did get to see Mama Mia in the West End. As well as some stompingly good piano, Nick also provided a vocal chorus on this one.

Playing Poor Butterfly as a bossa was close to sacrilege but it seemed to work. Blue Turning Gray Over You was a sheer delight - nice trumpet playing and an acceptable vocal from ET complete with a few Satchmo facialisms.

Appropriately, the show finished with The Song is Ended although, as I type, the melody is still lingering on.

Back again next weekend.
