Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Carroll & Carey Livestream - May 27

Liane Carroll (piano/vocals); Roger Carey (bass guitar/vocals).

As mentioned in the previous post, the irrepressible, APPJAG nominated, Liane Carroll and her soulmate Roger Carey were going online from their living room tonight at 8 - which they duly did - and it was a jolly jazz happening with Liane singing and playing in her own unique style and Roger laying down some bluesy bass lines and adding the odd vocal.

It took a while to get going - at least for me it did. Facebook and I aren't the best of bedfellows even though I've got 907 of them. It freezes and it is just so frustrating when, for example, the duo are in full flight on There Will Never be Another You only for the music to stop mid syllable and the viewer right and left clicking until normal service is resumed.

Fortunately, once we were back on track, everything was as enjoyable as a trip to Barnard Castle which, I'm told, has now replaced Lourdes as a healing centre - it's also only a few miles from Durham Prison...

However, I digress ...

My Baby Just Cares for Me; Pretending To Care; a couple of solo pieces by Liane - Big Yellow Taxi & I Get Along Without You Very Well - followed by Roger singing Meet Me in the Morning with a hint of Mose Allison in the vocal and the piano backing.

Liane followed with a touching rendition of Here's to Life which had many of the Facebook audience reduced to tears ...

A surprise! Love Potion Number 9. The Leiber/Stoller/Coasters number is one of my favourites if only just for the words. It brought back memories of seeing The Coasters live in the open-air at a park in New Jersey (along with The Drifters and The Platters) back in 2004.

The stream finished off with an original by Liane, Fly Little Bird, and some more blues from Roger - 'fraid I didn't catch the title.

Despite Facebook's determination to do their damnedest, it turned out alright in the end. Am I the only one who has this problem with the unsocial media?
