Brian Bennett (banjo); Jim McBriarty (clarinet, vocals); Phil Smith (double bass); Fred Thompson (drums, vocals)On Boxing Day last year the Vieux Carre Hot 4 entertained the holiday throng at Spanish City. Exactly one year on the Vieux Carre Hot 4 did precisely the same thing. Valerie's Tearoom couldn't have been busier - all tables taken, pots of tea, coffee and walnut cake the typical post Christmas Day fayre.
I'm Confessin' That I Love You sang Fred Thompson sitting at a minimalist kit set up...a lone snare. Jim McBriarty shared vocal duties with FT - Sweet Sue (with clarinet) one of many feature numbers for the talented multi reedsman.
Bandleader Brian Bennett marched the quartet from Valerie's through to Trencher's situated in the impressive cavernous space under the building's iconic dome to perform the second of today's three sets which included Bye Bye Blues, East of the Sun and West of the Moon (Thompson singing) and Irving Berlin's All by Myself. Later in the afternoon, following a short break, the Hot 4 relocated to the first floor Champagne Bar with its panoramic views out across the North Sea to conclude this end-of-year holiday emgagement.

I’m not sure what the the hollow, white, plastic tube with holes in is used for (see pic), but our Australian friend and clarinetist, DON ARMSTRONG, could definitely get a tune out of it.
