Bebop Spoken There

Sullivan Fortner: ''I always judge it by the bass player: If the bass player is happy, it's going to be a good night". (DownBeat, February 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

BBC Radio 3: Jazz All Night

(Report by Hugh C).

I seem to be permanently in arrears, listening arrears that is, these days.  I have just been catching up with Jazz AllNight, broadcast overnight (funnily enough!) during the early morning of 16th November, at the start of the EFG London Jazz Festival.

Luckily for me, BBC Sounds has offered me a short-term loan (the same offer is available to everyone) originally available for 30 days, but still available for just over two weeks.

Highlights for me (thus far) are items on two of the Godfathers of Jazz  (BBC speak) hosted by Julian Joseph with a guest presenter:  Sonny Rollins (guest - Tony Kofi) and Herbie Hancock (guest – Jason Rebello).

These hour long programmes include seminal tracks by the artist in question, fascinating archival interview excerpts and incisive comments by the expert guests.  Other offerings include Hermeto Pascoal in Concert, NYOS Jazz Orchestra with Yazz Ahmed, Rob Luft, Jazz Masterclass with Tim Garland, Misha Mullov-Abbado, a link up with Jazz FM, hosted by Helen Mayhew and two other delights.

Click on the Jazz All Night link above to find out more, but hurry, stocks are limited
