The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Angelina Smyschlajew: Interim Recital @ Band Studios, Newcastle University - Dec 11

Angelina Smyschlajew (voice); accompanist Stuart Collingwood (piano)
(Review by Russell)

Angelina Smyschlajew first appeared on BSH's radar last month when the German born Newcastle University music student sang at a Black Swan jam session. Today's formalities - ANGELINA SMYSCHLAJEW VOICE MAJOR SPECIALIST STUDIES IN PERFORMANCE MUS3014 Teacher - Ruth Lambert Accompanist - Stuart Collingwood. Yes, at lunchtime today Angelina gave her interim master's recital singing four songs accompanied by pianist Stu Collingwood.

Perhaps it was Stu Collingwood's idea that Angelina should turn up at a jam session to sing a couple of songs as a form of last minute prep for today's recital or it could well have been Ruth Lambert's idea. The fact that Collingwood was house pianist at the jam session suggests it was his idea! At the Black Swan we heard Angelina sing Angel Eyes (BSH Editor-in-Chief LL dubbed the number Angelina Eyes) and Lullaby of Birdland. Here in the Band Studios on Assembly Lane our examinee sang those very same numbers alongside Nature Boy and Taking a Chance on Love

Standing in the literal glare of the spotlight in front of examiners must be a nerve-wracking experience. As Angelina began her recital singing Nature Boy was there a hint of nerves? Possibly/probably and, if our EU Erasmus student was nervous, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Angelina found her feet on Vernon Duke's Taking a Chance on Love. Expressive, confidence surging, Angelina seemed to be relaxing into it and Stu's expert accompaniment couldn't have been other than reassuring.

Angelina thanked those who took the time to visit the Band Studios to listen to her sing. One thing is certain, if Angelina drops by one of Newcastle's many jam sessions she will receive a warm welcome.
