(By Gordon Solomon)
The article on the Polish quintet
brought back many memories for me. This band actually came to the New Orleans
Club in 1968, their tour in the UK was organised on an exchange arrangement
with the Polish Jazz Federation, and the Newcastle based band chosen to go in
return to Poland and tour for three weeks was the Phoenix Jazzmen.
I remember I
bought a second hand Ford Thames crew bus from a bombsite car dealer in
Stanhope Street for £40 - unbelievably it got us all the way to Poland and
completed the tour. The arrangement was that the PJF kept the vehicle for their
own use and flew us back to the UK, which worked out well.
I really should
write a book about the hilarious times we had over there but I would probably
face litigation!
We also took author Scott Dobson, later famous for his "Larn
Yersel Geordie" books, along for the ride and he took some (not very good)
photos on his ancient camera. I've attached a couple of them, showing the band
playing at a students ball in Warsaw University.
The personnel was: Derek Dalton
(trumpet), Eric Clegg (reeds), Gordon Solomon (trombone), Eddie Piper (bass), Bill
Walton (banjo), Gordon Herrick (drums), and Carole Clegg (vocals).
