Bebop Spoken There

Sullivan Fortner: ''I always judge it by the bass player: If the bass player is happy, it's going to be a good night". (DownBeat, February 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. No Fox @ The Globe – Oct. 17

Sam Fox (tenor sax); Tom Alcorn (trumpet); Charlie Isaac (keyboards); Archie Williamson (drums); Jack Deere-Jones (Bass).

(Review by Debra M)

No Fox returned to The Globe on Thursday night, following on from their earlier visit in June.  Tenor player Sam Fox has graduated, but the rest of the band remain as students and members of Newcastle University Jazz Orchestra.

The band took to the stage, and through the first set the bar filled up, over a 100 through the door.  With most of the songs underpinned by a grooving rhythm section, the floor in front of the stage was soon packed, the cheering audience urging on the soloists.

Archie Williamson delivered some blistering stick work, whilst Tom Alcorn on trumpet & saxophonist Sam Fox individually excelled, and as a pair blew some satisfyingly tight horn arrangements.

Clearly influenced by Snarky Puppy, No Fox’s music, a mixture of standards such as Cantaloupe Island and Equinox, plus originals, provides a party vibe whilst, at the same time, maintaining the space for improvisation.  The packed house loved it but it also meant I couldn’t get close enough for a photo of the band. However, I think the above shot of the crowd goes well towards capturing the ambience of a rather special evening.

I think you're right Debra, and great to see. I'd have liked to have been there to help you bring the average age up - LOL as they say on facebook.
