Ginger Baker died today (October 8) at the age of eighty. Forever known as co-founder of Cream, Baker's early career included stints working with Diz Disley and Terry Lightfoot. Alexis Korner came calling, similarly Graham Bond but it was the formation of super-group Cream in 1966 with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce which would later see the Londoner inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Baker had a fractious on and off stage relationship with Jack Bruce (in October 2014 BSH reported the death of the composer/bassist/vocalist) which persisted long after Cream's short but influential existence (1966-68). Blind Faith (including Eric Clapton) proved to be an equally short-lived super-group and in the early seventies Baker toured Ginger Baker's Airforce and the Baker-Gurvitz Army before heading to Africa (notably Nigeria and a fruitful partnership with Fela Kuti).
Baker insisted he wasn't a rock drummer and in later years worked with jazz notables Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden. A 2012 documentary film - Beware Mr. Baker (reviewed by BSH, May 30, 2013) - showed Baker to be in fighting form, quite literally, as director Jay Bulger found to his cost! Whatever perceived shortcomings there were about the man the music of Peter Edward 'Ginger' Baker will live on.

Does anyone remember seeing Ginger Baker at the Seaburn Hall venue with the Terry Lightfoot Band around 1957. He was only a kid but played in a demented style totally in control of his kit. Even then his talent was obvious.
