They arrived over the weekend to conduct a workshop in Sage Gateshead's Music Education Centre. A number of well-known faces signed-up for the event and minutes before the start of last night's concert one workshop participant spoke to BSH saying the day had been a wonderful experience. Yes, Richard Bona and Alfredo Rodriguez were in town and Sage Two's ground floor was at capacity as the duo took to the stage.
It can't be every day that Alfredo Rodriguez gets to play a Steinway piano on a gig and he set about playing Sage Gateshead's instrument with relish. The Cuban's on-stage companion, Richard Bona, sat on a high stool to sing and play his five string bass (the Cameroonian is a Markbass amplifiers endorsee). Rarely can there have been a more compatible pairing; a genuine warmth between to the two, their virtuosity quite breathtaking - in the case of bassist Bona a casual brilliance born of natural talent. Bona suggested they play something the 'Newcastle' audience would recognise. 'Newcastle', 'Gateshead', what's in a name?! And so to Jesse Harris' Don't Know Why, the song that brought Norah Jones international acclaim.
Bona sang in English, French, Portuguese and one or more of Cameroon's many languages in perfect harmony with his instrument and that of Rodriguez. Afro-Cuban, bossa, popular song, a rare swingtime section, dazzling contrapuntal lines (Rodriguez studied classical piano in Havana), the duo applied their palette of many colours to a broad canvas. A one set performance of seventy five minutes extended well beyond an hour and a half such was the duo's obvious enjoyment playing to an on-side audience. Bona and Rodriguez are touring the globe, it could be a while before they return to Tyneside, if and when they do make sure you're there to greet them.
