Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The return of Vasilis the Great!

Tomorrow night (Friday, October 25) sees the return of Vasilis Xenopoulos to Opus 4 Jazz Club in Darlington. The Traveller's Rest gig is the first of three in the region for the Greek born, London resident tenor saxophonist. Year after year the 'house full' signs go up at the Cockerton roadhouse pub and it'll be no different this weekend. Expect a set of standards with the focus on Xenopoulos' new Dexter Gordon-inspired album Dexterity.

Working with Xenopoulos on all three dates will be the Paul Edis Trio. A superb trio in its own right (Edis, piano, Andy Champion, bass, Russ Morgan, drums), the addition of the still young (!) but wonderfully 'old school' tenor player promises to make any one of the three performances a contender for 'Gig of the Year'. Friday's action begins at 8:00pm (doors 7:30, £12 at the door) - start queuing now!

Saturday (October 26) finds Vasilis and the boys at St Cuthbert's Centre in Crook. Same as Friday, a large turn out is anticipated, 7:30pm start, seven quid (includes a slice of pizza!) at the door, and on Sunday don't be caught out by the one o'clock start at the Black Bull, Blaydon. Pay on the door £10. All three gigs come with the highest recommendation. If you've heard Vasilis Xenopoulos you won't want to miss out this time round and if you're yet to hear him you really shouldn't miss out!

Yeah! Russell's right about not missing the 1pm start for Vasi's Black Bull Sunday gig. Jazzers need to remember that the clocks go back late Saturday/Sunday early morning - by one hour!
