Bebop Spoken There

Trevor Mires: ''My mum is a Dean Martin fan: I'm not, so I would grab my skateboard and get out of the house whenever I heard "Everybody Loves Somebody, Sometime." ". (Jazzwise, April 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Cathy Segal-Garcia - Straight Ahead to the U.K.

(Review by Lance).

A prolific recording artist, this is Segal-Garcia's 13th album - an album that was actually recorded in London 2011 - with an assortment of (anything but motley!) British musicians including her close friend the late Andy Mackintosh.

Sermonette has a fantastic churchy feel to it. Gardner, Morgan and Frank's B3 all contribute but it's 'Sister' Cathy who does the preachin'!

I Get Along Without You Very Well has more mellow trumpet as well as an emotive vocal from Cathy.

Shake It Down rocks and Andy blows alto to great effect. Cathy gives a hip-swivelling vocal.

Song 4 Sandy was composed by Cathy when her daughter was 4 years old. That Sandy is now 40 indicates that the song has staying power. Cathy scats, Andy blows, Frank's B3 fills it out and it swings.

Another swinger is Gypsy in my Soul with the B3 once more in the driving seat. Trumpet picks up the groove and Cathy goes into Ella mode.

Things settle down with Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg's Last Night When We Were Young. Turn the lights down low, pour a drink and maybe share the music with someone. Andy helps create the mood and Cathy's vocal is a musical aphrodisiac.

Hippityville has lyrics by Cathy and she is joined (at the hip?) by Norma Winstone.

Other tracks: Highwire; Recipe of Love; Something We May Never Know; Dreamsville.

Well worth checking out here.
