In an earlier review, Steve H queried as to whatever world music may be. A good question as, is not music made the world over? Which also begs the question, is all music not made by folk?
No less an authority than John Fordham of The Guardian is quoted as saying "Nobody writes world music quite like Loz Speyer, and he's long deserved a bigger stage, and the resources to match".
So, that's the answer to Steve's question - just listen to Loz Speyer. I'll leave it to Ann Alex to resolve the other!
Clave Sin Embargo fuses Cuban music and jazz brilliantly and, as I listen, I'm metaphorically sipping a Daiquiri in a bar in Havana whilst, at the same time, musing... If John Fordham was a Cuban would he still class this as world music?
However, all this musing detracts from what is a cracking album. Speyer has captured the mood perfectly with his compositions, arrangements and fiery Latin trumpet solos.
Hathaway, Speyer's front line partner, complements the leader - he wails! - and with Hall's spiky guitar and a rhythm section to face a firing squad for, combines to make this as good a Caribbean experience as you're likely to encounter anywhere in the world of music.
