Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Madeleine Peyroux @ Sage Gateshead - July 8

(Preview by Lance/Photo courtesy of Raphaël Perez © 2019 *).
Madeleine Peyroux is one of those singers that every aspiring vocalist should see at least once in their lifetime - once a day would be even better! Monday night at Sage Gateshead will be my third time and if this one's as good as the other two then I'm in for a grand evening.

These days, Peyroux is more of a cross-genre performer rather than an out and out jazzer but the jazz is never far away, mingling seamlessly with the folk, blues and country elements that define where she is today - or is she? On past performances, don't be surprised if the enigmatic singer has added a new string to her guitar.
The venue's website more or less sums it up: "Madeleine Peyroux’s extraordinary journey is one of the music industry’s most compelling. Eight albums and 22 years since her debut release Dreamland, Peyroux continues to challenge the confines of jazz, venturing into the fertile fields of contemporary music with unfading curiosity."

I think we will witness all of that on Monday night!

*The excellent photo of Madeleine Peyroux was taken by Parisian photographer Raphaël Perez at a concert entitled Blues Sur Seine 2018. For more photos from that gig follow this link.
