Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''We knew back in the day that Emmet [Cohen] had it.'' (DownBeat July, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Jake Walker Orchestra @ The Black Swan - July 8

New Orleans, Dixieland, swing, it's the new thing, you know. Recent visits to BSH's heartland by the likes of America's Frog and Henry, the Shake 'Em Up Jazz Band and Taylor Smith and the Roamin' Jasmine (performing to large crowds) and gigs by homegrown talent - Adrian Cox's Profoundly Blue, the Tenement Jazz Band, the Red Hot Rhythm Makers, the Northern Monkey Brass Band, House of the Black Gardenia - tell the story...swing (and all things New Orleans) is the thing!

Tomorrow night (Monday) in the Black Swan (Newcastle Arts Centre) Swing Tyne devotees (and anyone else who fancies it) will be dancing the night away to the sounds of Jake Walker*. Jake who? you ask. No, no, not 'he', 'they'. The Jake Walker Orchestra, all the way from Ghent, Belgium, will be setting the tempo from eight o'clock.

The seven-piece outfit - trumpet, trombone, two reeds, piano, bass, drums - loves Louis, Jelly Roll, Basie, Duke, Benny G, John Kirby et al. The orchestra's Monday night gig in Newcastle falls between two Edinburgh engagements (Sunday, then Tuesday). Check 'em out on YouTube then get down to Westgate Road for a stompin' hot session. Admission on the door is a giveaway four quid!

'Jake Walk - paralysis or loss of muscle control in the hands and feet on consumption of Jamaican ginger'. Hey! Mr Bartender! Gimme one of those Jake Walks!
