This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: The Gene Krupa Story @ The Pizza Express, Soho - July 13


Krupa, O'Day, Denmark Street - it has all the makings of a big band super gig. At lunchtime on Saturday (July 13) at the Dean Street (Soho) Pizza Express the Demark Street Big Band will be telling the story of one of the great jazz drummers, Mr Gene Krupa.

The Denmark Street Big Band, assembled and directed by Paul Burch, comprises London-based A-listers (subject to availability, these guys are so busy - West End shows, studio recording sessions, jazz gigs in and out of town!) taking on a range of projects. The latest is The Gene Krupa Story. The set list is likely to include Leave Us Leap, Drum Boogie and Drummin' Man. And, what's more, the fabulous Jo Harrop will be singing Anita O'Day with the band - Bolero at the Savoy, Boogie Blues, Let Me Off Uptown...can't wait! MD Burch promises a Goodman-Krupa dust-up, it should be fun! Will Ms Harrop be wearing a sensational hat, a la Ms O'Day? Either way, our girl (our County Durham born girl!) is the tops.
