Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Clare Teal @ York Opera House - July 19

Clare Teal (vocals); Jason Rebello (piano); Simon Little (bass); Ben Reynolds (drums) + Giacomo Smith (alto sax/clarinet); Pete Horsfall (trumpet/vocals); Dave Archer (guitar)
(Review by Liz)

Sorry I didn't manage a proper review, I was so enthralled with Clare's performance, it just slipped by, with me applauding & whooping etc...I was totally fired up - writing would have been a distraction. As the pics show we did get to chat with her, she remembered Kevin as he sends comments to her on her Radio Show which he listens to in the USA every week...straight away she asked him if he was the guy from Detroit! She was so lovely to me, warm & friendly.
My fave was Mr Paganinibut hard to pick one out. The musicians were superb, esp. the three extra musicians on brass & guitar, the guy on trumpet was outstanding, also his vocals were great..he looked like a bank Manager, but OMG!

They did an Inkspots’ number, also they all did Elvis' Don't with great harmonising. Clare concluded with It Don't Mean a Thing. Sarah & I were on our feet and the audience loved them, but amazing not to see a full house for such a worthy performer.

Yeah - this just had to be a fabulous gig, with this line up! I'm sure Pete Horsfall would be highly amused to hear you thought he looked like a Bank Manager, Liz! He is an ace player, though - and has a great vocal style. I've seen him a few times in different bands, including his own Basin Street Brawlers.

Hi Patti, I was fascinated by his deadpan facial expression, it added to the fun. I had never heard of him which is my loss. I loved the way he morphed into Satchmo on one of his numbers, do hope he comes to York again.
