After the event organiser had introduced the APPJAG Jazz Media award winner to the audience, the important stuff got underway.
It was to be an afternoon where singers predominated and who better to set the ball rolling than Hailey Tuck from Austin, Texas, and now based in Europe.
I'd heard Hailey a couple of year's back at Hoochie with SSBB so I knew a scintillating set was in store.
At Hoochie, Rick Simpson provided the accompaniment and, having heard Rick earlier in the week at Ronnie's as part of the Leo Richardson Quartet when he told me he was on this gig, I knew it was going to be a double whammy!
Bubbly babe Hailey seems to be a throwback to the flapper era whilst still putting it into today's content.
The material, not surprisingly, included material from her album Junk, reviewed earlier this year, and there were gems-a-plenty.
Alcohol, the lyric by The Kinks, was delivered effectively - and what a great lyric it is - enough to put you on the wagon for a week.
Her in-between patter was good bringing in family stories - or was it confidences she shared nightly?
Who cares? this lady is a champ. Polka Dots and Moonbeams made me sigh, My Funny Valentine made me cry twice - first because I thought, - oh no, not again? - then because it was so emotional I wanted to hear it again!
As observed earlier, Rick (from Guisborough via Ronnie Scotts') Simpson was on form. Piano accompaniment, great solos and B3 effects from the adjacent keyboard, he laid it all down. Hyson on bass and the brothers Haines did the business - more solos from you guys next time - tell Mama Tuck
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright; Cry to Me; Marine 5's Some Other Time; Trouble in Mind and the final After You've Gone said, "Okay you gals, bring it on!"
