Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: trio WoRK

Ken Wild (bass); Tom Rizzo (guitar); Susan Krebs (vocal).
(Review by Lance).
A delightful vignette, so laid back that Krebs' vocals make Julie London sound like Big Mama Thornton. The voice, almost a whisper, winds its way around your emotions. Soft and sensuous with each word as meaningful as the lyricist's intent - maybe more so given Kreb's reading of the words. Words and phrases with an effective emphasis on spaces.
It's an album for late nights in - with a drink or a partner or both. In time, it may well be filed alongside Wee Small Hours, Black Coffee and other post-midnight classics. In the meantime, congratulate yourself on having got in on the ground floor.

Bassist Wild boasts a strong studio pedigree having been the centre-back on many film and TV soundtracks as well as recording and appearing live with, among others, James Moody, Terence Blanchard, Dianne Reeves and Natalie Cole.
Rizzo too has an impressive roster of credits including Blood, Sweat and Tears, Maynard Ferguson, Brian Wilson and, like Wild, Natalie Cole. He also spent 10 years as part of Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show Band.
Both Wild and Rizzo make immense contributions, providing warm solos as well as the essential support needed with no keys or drums present. Indeed, keys and/or drums would destroy the intimacy of the session rather like his/her flatmate turning up at an inopportune moment.
Lance.
