This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Ushaw Extra! (August 24-26)

This time next week the Ushaw Jazz Festival will be in full swing. The full festival preview - posted Friday 17 - omitted details of two events...

Saturday (Aug 25) evening's late night jam session (10:15 'til late, free admission) will be hosted by pianist (and Ushaw Jazz Festival director) Paul Edis, Jazz Café jam session bass-playing mover and shaker Paul Grainger and County Durham-based drummer Abbie Finn. Ushaw's Francis Thompson Room (an inviting lounge full of oh-so-comfortable sofas) is the ideal setting for those who want to settle in for the duration or, indeed, sit-in. 

At eleven o'clock on Sunday morning (Aug 26) there will be a half hour performance in St Cuthbert's Chapel which promises to be a highlight of the weekend. Friends Paul Edis and Graeme Wilson will engage with the historic space - Edis getting to grips with the pipe organ (!), reeds maestro Wilson working with the wonderful acoustics - in an entirely improvised set. It's free admission and well worth arriving in time for the early start!

In addition to this, you can hear 'In Other Words' on the Sunday of the Ushaw festival performing a set between 2:30-3pm in the Francis Thompson Room. Free admission!

'In Other Words' are Alex Thompson (reeds), Nathan Lawson (guitar), and Dylan Thompson (drums). With a wide repertoire of jazz tunes, both classic and new, as well as their own take on modern hits, this Gateshead based youth jazz trio play with passion, drive and sophistication beyond their years.
