Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Exciting Line Up At Darlington Jazz Festival 2018

(Press release)
Darlington Jazz Festival makes its return for the seventh year this May and organisers are planning a variety of quality musical performances, which all come under the wide umbrella of jazz.

Since the festival started in 2012, it has gone from strength to strength, providing a platform for both local and regional talent, whilst still continuing to attract national artists prominent on today’s jazz scene. This year, the festival is expanding to more venues than ever before with acts performing at a number of different locations around the town.
The headline event on Saturday, May 5 is an evening of swinging big band music from the 1950s to the present day, making a welcome return to The Central Hall at the Dolphin Centre.  This will feature Alan Barnes supported by the Durham Alumni Big BandAlan is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist.  He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers.  The Durham Alumni Big Band is composed of past and present members of the Durham County Youth Big Band. Former winners of the Great North Big Band Festival they are guaranteed to put on a show.

Shaune Eland, Darlington Jazz Festival organiser, said:
‘The enjoyment of the festival has grown year on year for performers and audiences, and we hope that this year will be no different.’

A launch event is taking tonight, Sunday, March 11, at The Keys, Skinnergate, featuring Alter Ego and also giving an opportunity to pick information about Darlington Jazz Festival and buy tickets.
Darlington Jazz Festival runs from Wednesday, May 2 – Sunday, May 6 and is a precursor to Darlington Arts Festival, which takes place later in the month.
