Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

14 days and counting…book the baby sitter now!

The nights are drawing in, Christmas is coming, it's Vasilis Xenopoulos time! October means one thing…Vasilis Xenopoulos will soon be back in town. Book the baby sitter now! On Friday 21 October at the Traveller’s Rest in Cockerton, Darlington, the tenor saxophonist extraordinaire will once again attract a capacity audience. The doors open   at eight o’clock. Arrive by 7:30pm to join the queue, leave it any later and you can kiss goodbye to a seat! Vasi will be working with pianist Paul Edis, bassist Andy Champion and Russ Morgan (drums). If you live within a fifty-mile radius of DL3 9ER be there!

Xenopoulos and Edis cross the border – Northumberland/Cumbria – to play a couple of engagements before reuniting with Champion and Morgan at the Black Bull in Blaydon on Sunday 23. The first set starts at 8:00pm. Best seats are at a premium at Blaydon Jazz Club, therefore, the best advice is to arrive early. Seven o’clock should do it. Last year’s gig with Vasi and the boys saw the lounge bulging at the seams.
Who’s your favourite pianist? Double bass player? Drummer? Ah, yes. Americans, long since departed to the Big Jazz Club in the Sky. Jazz ain’t what it used to be, you say. Switch off telly, put on coat, head to Blaydon NE21 4JJ. Prepare to eat your pork pie hat! Paul Edis, piano, Andy Champion, double bass and drummer Russ Morgan will make you think you’re on 52nd street. Vasilis Xenopoulos is the real deal. Don’t forget your pork pie hat.

Russell.
