This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Kenny Baker

Roly has drawn my attention to the death of Kenny Baker (not to be confused with the late trumpet player, the 1940s Irish tenor or the former politician, but the diminutive Star Wars actor who died yesterday, August 13, aged 83.)
Roly recalled that, apart from his other eminent activities, he  was a good jazz harmonica player. When he appeared at the Theatre Royal back in the 1980s he often sat in with Roly and the band at Blaydon Jazz Club arriving in a modified Merc with built up pedals etc. Remembered as a very nice man who really loved his jazz.

Roly is right, I worked with him at Pontin's Gt Yarmouth back in the early 80's. A good all round entertainer and a good harmonica player. R.I.P.
